Perfect weather conditions and 521 entries made for a fantastic day of competition in track and field for athletes aged from under-6 through to under-15 from 21 centres across the state.

South Launceston athlete Addison McKercher set a record in the girls’ under-6, 200-metres with a time of 41.20 seconds eclipsing the previous mark of 42.20.

South-East Districts Winston Forrest set a new mark in the under-9 boys’ high jump of 1.23m beating the old record of 1.22m.

Jade Longstaff and Arabella Phillips, of South Launceston Centre, dominated the under-15 girls’ events, with Longstaff winning the 200m hurdles, 90m hurdles, 200m sprint, and finishing second in the 800m.

Phillips won the 800m, triple jump and was second in the 90m hurdles and 200m.

Other notable performances were by Amie Broad, of North Launceston-White City Centre, who won the under-12 girls’ hurdles and 200m events.

Ethan Arnott, from Longford Districts, won the under-8 boys’ high jump and shot put, finished second in the hurdles and third in the 200m, while James McEwan, from Kingborough, won the under-12 boys’ shot put and was third in the discus.

Many of the athletes competing achieved personal best results and qualifying standards for the state championships being held in March.

LATas president Rhonda O’Sign said under-14 and 15 athletes would have the chance to qualify to attend the 2016 International Children’s Games being held in Taipei City in July.

A total of 24 athletes will compete against 90 cities from 40 countries in an international track and field competition for children aged up to 15 years.

Twelve athletes from the North are to be selected for the Launceston City team, and 12 athletes from the South for the Hobart City Team. The teams will be announced in December
